Quartz Wool vs. Glass Wool: Properties, Composition, and Applications

Update : 2024-12-30

Quartz Wool (Quartz Fiber Cotton):

● Composed of high-purity silica and natural quartz crystals.

● Created through high-temperature melting and special processing.

● Appearance: white, fluffy, resembling cotton.

● Characteristics: odorless, non-volatile, amorphous, no binders.

Glass Wool (Glass Fiber Cotton):

● Made from natural minerals (quartz sand, limestone, dolomite) and chemical raw materials (soda ash, borax).

● Formed by melting the mixture into glass and spinning it into fine fibers.

● Properties: porous material with good insulating and sound-absorbing capabilities.

Comparison:

● Quartz wool has over 99.9% silica content, much higher than glass wool.

● Purity of quartz wool is greater than that of glass wool.

● Silica's temperature resistance allows quartz wool to withstand continuous use at 1000℃.

Applications:

● Quartz wool: Used for high-temperature filling, insulation, composite reinforcement, and as filler in analytical instruments or laboratory reaction tubes due to its curly fiber structure that prevents compression and enhances insulation.

● Glass wool: Predominantly used in building materials for its excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties.
